Big Trees and Big Freeze in Walpole

We drove from Margaret River to Pemberton which was a sweet little town. Just outside the town in the forest is the tallest fire lookout made from a karri tree - and at 200ft it is high! I had a go climbing up, but after about 8 steps I was too scared and came down again. Gordon, however, was very brave and climbed all the way to the top - here are the photos to prove it! I made do with trying to feed the lovely birds. Lots of lovely wildlife here and as we drove from Pemberton to Walpole, the forests changed again.

Over to Albany today which is a very pretty “city”. It has lots of old buildings and a delightful little church with 19th Cent. British windows. It was home from home - the church was shut! We went on the Brig, the “Amity” which was great - as I always go on “The Grand Turk” when it is in Ramsgate it was a bit reminiscent. It is a full size replica of the ship that brought the first settlers over from Sydney; built in the 1970s, the original was lost in 1845 with no loss of life.

After that 2 natural phenomena. “The Blow Hole” where water blows through the cracks in the cliff to look like a whale spurt was great. Even though the water did not come up to our level, it made such a loud noise we almost fell over! The other part was “the Gap” and “The Natural Bridge”. The clue is in the name - but it was formed when Australia split from Antarctica billions of years ago. Fantastic even in the wind and rain (and I drove home in it too!).

And when it rains…..and it did all night and on and off during the day. We went to The Tree Top walk where a metal walk way allows you to travel up to 40m above the ground in the tree tops. Or should I say bounce and sway as it felt as if you were in a ship on a choppy sea. The views and the trees were great, there were Karri, Karri Oak and Red & Yellow Tingles which are only found in the Walpole area. Some are so big you can walk through the hollowed out trunks. Great experience.
