Perth September 2008

This is our hotel -a lovely Art Deco front with basic but good modern rooms. No complaints there apart from the fact that we arrived at 6am and could not check in til 2pm. We were spaced out so we went for a strong coffee and a walk around the city.

Perth is an ever changing and enlarging mixture of modern buildings with those from the early 20th C.

Perth is a very pretty city but did not have any "wow" factor for us. The shops all close at 5.30, restaurants are either burger takeaways or pricy at £12 - £15 for what would cost us £8 in the UK. Anthony says it is because the people in Oz don't eat out like we do in the UK. Public transport was fab and very, very cheap...but then a new paper back cost £12. Not on for readacholics like Gordon and me.

Our visit to King's Park was amazing. All the fantastic pictures you have seen of exotic plant life and birds all in front of us in real life. You can imagine how many photos we took.

The first 2 days were sunny; similar to a good UK summer. However, the 3rd day was rain - and it was cold and it did not stop all day. We were drenched. Went on the train and bus to Hilary's Boat Harbour near Sorrento to see the aquarium. Amazing; and it was only the sealife from the coast of Western Australia!

Also popped to Fremantle which is no more than a pleasant smaller version of Perth. What an odd place this is on first impressions. So cheap for travel, though food (and I mean in the supermarkets as well) so expensive. Gordon is suffereing palpatations from Mars Bars at £1.70 each! The place is a mixture of business people, trailer trash, immigrants (and I don't mean from the UK) and homeless (most being WASPs not Abos). We have enjoyed our stay here but apart from needing to be here to fly to Melbourne it will be the only visit we make!!
Off to Monkey Mia with Claire (Miss Huntley) and Anthony tomorrow to see the dolphins so there may be a delay in the next blog installment until we have internet access again.

Hello Gorgeous People!
I'm gobsmacked the food is so expensive. How were your ancient almost-living things? Not sure what the bits lower down the page all mean regarding identity so if you don't know who this is from.... ooh the excitement... no its not Darth Vader its Alison. Hope you're having a really lovely time. I'll put the computer on in Alan's name in future - the skype seems happier that way. Does this get to show up on your blog? If it does sorry to spoil your page and hello everyone! Let's find out... Love to you both.
